Provence & Côte d’Azur: The stormy weather from the Var is advancing along the coast, bringing rain and thunder with it
Wintery conditions continue
The Var and the Alpes Maritimes have been placed under a yellow alert by Météo France as wind, rain and snow batters the Mediterranean coast.
Yesterday, Tuesday 22nd January, snow was again recorded in the Var during the night. The western and northern regions, especially around Brignoles and Verdon, are expecting more today. Snow is estimated to reach as low as 400 meters, with four to eight centimetres of snow predicted for the west, and 20 centimetres for Verdon.
The coastal region is also at high risk of flooding as heavy rain and thunderstorms plague the shoreline. Residents of the Alpes Maritimes region woke up this Wednesday morning beneath overcast skies. As the storm advances along the coast, Cannes is suffering choppy seas and strong winds.
The bad weather is taking its toll on traffic too. The road leading to Castérino has only just been reopened after it was shut last week. The A8 between La Turbie and Menton might see snow today, while the D22 between Saint Agnès and Col de Saint Pancrace near Menton is closed after a landslide. Diversions are in place.
Conditions are expected to improve in the evening.
