Bus crash, Chinese down, Mountain snow and World war II.

Fatal bus crash – Investigations continue into a coach crash on the A-8 motorway that left a child dead and 42 people injured. The Romanian tourist coach ended lying on its side, on the wrong side of the road, after crashing near Vidauban, in the Var. The accident occurred at 9.31 yesterday morning, as the bus travelled towards Aix-en-Provence. An 18-month-old girl was killed and several of the injured, aged 6-to-74, remain in a critical condition. One line of investigation is that a blown tyre caused the driver to lose control, mount a concrete dividing barrier and end up overturned on the opposite carriageway. The traffic on the motorway was disrupted until 3pm.

Chinese tourist drowns – A Chinese tourist has drowned at Monaco’s Pecheurs beach, which is situated between the port and the prison. The 53-year-old man died after going for a swim at the unpatrolled beach yesterday lunchtime. A 54-year-old Russian tourist, who saw the man in distress tried to rescue him, but he too got into difficulties. Two marine police officers were injured trying to save both swimmers. There was a large swell and strong winds at the beach at the time.

Mountain snow falls – The highest peaks of the Mercantour mountains have received their first snowfalls. Several centimeters cover the mountains, including Isola 2000. More snow was forecast for today.
Two mountain walkers were susprised by the sudden change in weather conditions and had to be rescued. A patrol of Gendarmes recovered the pair, aged 42 and 17, early yesterday morning. They had been camping at the Millefonts lake, when the temperatures plunged.

Monaco Liberation celebrations – A colorful spectacle, albeit mostly olive green, marked the 68th anniversary of Monaco’s liberation from German forces. Scores of military vehicles and enthusiasts in World War II costumes, took part in yesterday’s celebrations. Spectators, including HSH Prince Albert II, were fascinated by the assembly in the square outside the Princes’ Palace. There was also a parade at 11.00 this morning along Monaco’s boulevard des Moulins.
