Chopper down, jobless numbers up and new schoolyear kicks off.




Fatal chopper crash - A man and his son from the Var have been killed in a helicopter crash. The father and son from Le Luc died yesterday morning when their chopper came down near Valouse, in the Drome department. The father, a businessman in the construction sector, was piloting the Robinson helicopter. The body of his teenage son was found 200-metres from wreckage. An investigation is underway into the cause.

Bus victims critical - Four people injured in a coach crash on Sunday morning remain on life-support. An 18-month-old girl was killed, and 42 people injured when the bus overturned on the A-8 motorway near Vidauban, in the Var. 15 other people also remain in hospital. The coach was on its way from Madrid to Romania when it crashed at 9.40am Sunday. It is believed a blown tyre may have caused the crash.

New school year - More than 360-thousand children return to classes today, when the new school year begins. There are an extra 563-students compared to last year. Both the Alpes-Maritimes and Var authorities report a growing number of parents opting for private schools over the public sector.

Jobless numbers grow - There is a growing number of unemployed people in the Alpes-Maritimes. The jobless rate has leapt 10.4% in the past year. In the Var, the jobless rate has climbed 6.4%; overall in the PACA there has been a 7.3% rise, to a total of more than 381-thousand jobless. The sectors hardest hit have been construction and retail.

Corsica storm warning - There is an orange weather alert in force for Corsica. The island can expect major storms throughout the day. Up to 20-centimetres of rain will fall in some places, increasing the risk of floods. The warning is in force until 9pm.

Missing teenager search - There is still no sign of a teenage girl who vanished from a Var camping ground. The 14-year-old is believed to have run away with a fellow vacationer, a 23-year-old man. The pair vanished a week ago from Le Muy.
